Curtis Hanson & Searchlight Making Feature About Phony Cop: "

Unless you're from Gerald, Missouri, you probably don't know who Bill Anthony Jakob is, but you'll find out soon. Deadline reports that Fox Searchlight has signed on to produce a film about Jakob to be written by actor Clark Gregg (who wrote and directed Choke) and directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile, Lucky You) seen above. The original intent was to turn the story into a comedy, but since it wasn't funny for those involved (more on that below), they decided otherwise. Deadline doesn't say when this will go into production, but I hope it's sooner than later, since this is just such a wacky story. So who is this guy?

Bill Anthony Jakob is security guard charged in a 23-count indictment for impersonating police officers. He appeared in the small Missouri town of Gerald with a phony badge and convinced officials that he could use the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Dept. to crack down on the drug dealers. It worked effectively for a while and Jakob helped clean up a 'scourge of meth labs.' He was later discovered when a reporter writing about him did a search online and found out he was phony. He was simply just a rogue cop who thought he could pose as a federal agent and pull this off. Doesn't that sound like a fantastic story to be adapted into a feature film? Especially from the guy who directed L.A. Confidential? So why isn't this shooting already?!

Columbia Pictures has released a full movie trailer for the new Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups. The film stars Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Maria Bello, Gary Busey and David Spade, and is directed by Dennid Dugan, the filmmaker behind of some of Sandler’s earlier films like Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy, but who recently has been responsible for some comic clunkers like I Now Pronouce You Chuck & Larry, and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. Does this movie look any better? When I posted an earlier teaser trailer, I commented that is felt like:

“a fairly generic comedy, even more so than the recent Sander efforts. It looks like Almost makes you wish that Sandler was still making second rate romantic comedies with Drew Barrymore again. You know, when they at least featured a few good jokes. And what is that on Kevin James’ face? That can’t be a beard, is it”

Terribly Unfunny Full Trailer for Adam Sandler's Grown Ups: "

Its been five months since Sony debuted the teaser trailer for Grown Ups, starring Sandler, Schneider, Rock, James, Spade, Hayek, and Buscemi, but the official theatrical trailer is finally here (via MySpace). Unfortunately, my interest in this just went from slight to none. There's nothing funny about this, nothing exciting about it, no potential at all. It gets really bad when the entire group of kids and adults just stand around going 'ohhh!' every time Kevin James gets hurt. Who laughs at this kind of stuff? Now I know one movie that I will staying far away from this summer. If you still want to watch this trailer, then read on.

Thirty years after their high school graduation, five friends reunite for a Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Grown Ups is directed by long-time comedy director Dennis Dugan, of You Don't Mess with the Zohan, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, The Benchwarmers, National Security, Saving Silverman, Big Daddy, Beverly Hills Ninja, and Happy Gilmore previously. The screenplay was co-written by Adam Sandler, Tim Herlihy (Bedtime Stories, Mr. Deeds), and Fred Wolf (Dickie Roberts, Without a Paddle). Sony is bringing Grown Ups to theaters everywhere on June 25th. So am I the only one who thinks this just looks terrible?

Geoff Johns Talks Green Lantern and the Future of the DC Comics Movies: "

At WonderCon, Geoff Johns hinted that a Justice League of America live-action feature film might be in development, responding that he “Can’t talk about it yet, but we’ll talk in San Diego.” Today Comic Book Resources posted their annual 20 question reader Q&A with Johns which prodded CCO of DC Comics about what other potential big screen adaptations of other DC comic book properties we might expect to see:

“I can’t get into the exact DC slate right now, but we’re all working heavily on what that is with Warner Bros. and there will be news forthcoming. But, you can bet there is going to be a lot more than there is right now.”

I’m assuming that the forthcoming news will probably be announced at San Diego Comic-Con International this Summer. Johns was also asked about the Green Lantern movie, about his experiences on set, and his early impressions of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. Answer after the jump.

Magnolia Pictures has released the official movie trailer for Neil Jordan’s Ondine The dramatic fantasy story stars Colin Farrell as an Irish fisherman who discovers a woman in his fishing net who he believes to be a mermaid. Farrell’s current girlfriend and actress Alicja Bachleda plays the suspected mermaid.

The film premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and was met with good, but not great, reviews. Our friends at FirstShowing saw the film at the Canadian film fest, and say it is “a heartwarming feel with some beautiful cinematography, impressive acting, and just a wonderful story, that it’s easy to fall in love with this film.” Watch the trailer after the jump and leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Worth Watching: Official US Trailer for Neil Jordan's Ondine: "

Once upon a time. Mangolia has debuted the official US trailer on Apple for Neil Jordan's Ondine starring Colin Farrell as an Irish fisherman and the gorgeous Alicja Bachleda (who is currently dating Farrell). While this wasn't my favorite film of the Toronto Film Festival last year, it's one of a few that has stuck with me ever since I first saw it. It has such a heartwarming feel with some beautiful cinematography, impressive acting, and just a wonderful story, that it's easy to fall in love with this film. It's already played in Europe, but Magnolia will finally be bringing this to theaters in June, so be sure to go see it if it's playing near you!

Both written and directed by Neil Jordan (of The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire and The Brave One), Ondine is a lyrical modern fairy tale that tells the story of Syracuse (Colin Farrell), an Irish fisherman whose life is transformed when he catches a beautiful and mysterious woman (Alicja Bachleda) in his nets. His daughter Annie comes to believe that the woman is a magical creature, while Syracuse falls helplessly in love. However, like all fairy tales, enchantment and darkness go hand in hand. A story of love, hope and the unwavering belief in the impossible. Magnolia is bringing Ondine to limited theaters starting on June 4th.

This already sounds a bit iffy from that title. Heat Vision reports that Samuel Jackson and Kellan Lutz are in negotiations to join the 'indie action' movie Deathsport directed by former visual effects supervisor and first-time director Jonah Loop. The story centers on a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses. Jackson orchestrates the games, overseeing them from his computer lair with the help of twin ladies who see to his every desire. So is this a remake of the 1978 Deathsport or just 'inspired' by it?

I'm sorry, but this sounds like one of those movies we'll find in the $1 bargain bin five years from now. Sure, modern gladiator fights might be cool to see, but it got very cheesy with Jackson and his 'twin ladies.' Plus, Lutz isn't that great of an actor anyway. The film is being developed by the Motion Picture Corporation of America (of films like Taking Chance and, sadly, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2) and produced by Brad Krevoy, Mike Callaghan and Mark Williams. This has a budget of $10 million, which is I guess what makes this an indie. Shooting starts next month in Louisiana. The cast is still being put together, so stay tuned for updates.

It doesn’t look like he’s getting to it any time soon, but after Martin Scorsese finishes The Invention of Hugo Cabret and the planned follow-up Silence (his ‘Jesuit priest drama’) there has been talk of finally making The Irishman, which would reunite the director with Robert De Niro.

The Irishman is based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses, which is about Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a mob assassin who is believed to have carried out more than 25 mob murders, and claimed to have killed Jimmy Hoffa. Over a year ago De Niro said that he and Scorsese had the idea of incorporating a ‘film within a film’ angle to this project. And we're right back at where we started. THR is reporting that Hollywood powerplayers Bob and Harvey Weinstein have won the auction for the indie distributor Miramax today with a top bid of around $600 million. Where they got that money, I don't know. Miramax was founded in 1979 by the Weinsteins and sold to Disney in 1993. They then started their own company, The Weinstein Company, which still runs today, but has been on the verge of closing down due to a lack of successful films in recent years. In January, it was reported that Miramax would 'close its doors' and be auctioned off, including the 611 films in its library.

This is almost kind of funny, just because it's so odd to see the Weinsteins cycle back around to owning the company they started. The same company that shut down this year because they haven't had much success recently either. Why would they be interested in running Miramax again? And where did they get that kind of money? Here's the answer: the Weinsteins have been partnering with a billionaire financier named Ron Burkle who has other investors involved as well. So while it's Burkle and his people who actually own it, it'll be the Weinsteins who run it. The name actually came from the names of their parents Max & Miriam.

THR says that Disney is still 'going over the financial details provided by the Weinsteins,' so this won't be officially announced for a little while. I'm not really sure what to say to this. I thought the Weinsteins we're slowly fading away, but this means they must be trying to make a hell of a comeback. And what will happen to The Weinstein Company? So many questions, but so few answers. But we'll be sure to keep you updated on all the latest. Do you think Miramax can return to power being run by the Weinsteins again?

Update: Well despite THR's claim that this is pretty much a done deal, Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood says otherwise. She says that Disney told her on the record that 'no [Miramax] deal done and reports to the contrary are false.' Well this just gets more and more interesting. So who should we believe? Is Disney just playing coy because this got out much earlier than they wanted it to? We'll find out soon enough, I'm sure!

Avatar is Getting a Quick IMAX 3D Re-Release This Weekend: "

It is our duty to bring you news and information about movies showing in theaters, so we have to let you know about the upcoming re-release of James Cameron's Avatar in theaters this weekend, even though I don't really understand the point of it. AMC will be re-showing Avatar in 61 theaters in 29 cities in the US on April 16th and 17th (Friday and Saturday) in glorious IMAX 3D. The real reason is that Avatar hits DVD and Blu-Ray on April 22nd (Earth Day!) next week and this is your very last chance to see Avatar 'the way director James Cameron intended it to be experienced.' I'm not sure this is truly your last chance, though.

The only bad news is that the only showtimes for Avatar are at 11PM at night on Friday and Saturday. What the heck AMC? Why choose the absolute worst times to show a 3 hour movie? If you still want to go, you can click here for info on locations and tickets. This is not the extended cut of Avatar will be released back into IMAX theaters sometime in late summer. This is simple a double-dip last minute cash grab to get people out to see Avatar in theaters before it hits DVD and I'm not sure that many people care. Unfortunately this is a pretty half-assed attempt on AMC's part. I think they should be running it more than just at 11PM, come on!

I'm planning on picking up Avatar next week on Blu-Ray and watching it when I get it then. But I don't plan on re-watching it in theaters (in 3D) until the extended release hits sometime later this year. Anyone else?

Fox has debuted a new international trailer for their summer action movie Knight & Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. We've already seen at least two other official US trailers for this, so there's not much new footage or story that we get to see this time around. To be honest, I'm actually getting a bit tired of watching trailers for this. They're designed the same way: 'It was some guy who was a terrorist!' then we meet Cruise again and go on a wild ride for the rest of it. In fact, this may literally be the exact same trailer as the other new one, but whatever. I'm still excited for this, but I don't need to see more footage. Enjoy!

An action-comedy that follows a fugitive couple on a deadly adventure where nothing is what it seems.

Knight & Day, formerly known as Wichita or Trouble Man, is directed by New York-born filmmaker James Mangold, of 3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Identity, Kate & Leopold, Girl Interrupted, and also Cop Land previously. The screenplay was written by first-timer Patrick O'Neill whose only other writing credit is on a TV show called 'Dead Last.' 20th Century Fox is bringing Knight & Day to theaters (thankfully not in 3D, as far as we know) starting on June 25th this summer. Looking forward to seeing this in theaters or not?

Joss Whedon Rewriting Captain America & Avengers Scripts?: "

This latest 'rumor of the day' (although it seems more legitimate than inaccurate) from Pajiba claims that the recently announced director of Marvel's The Avengers movie, geek favorite Joss Whedon, will also be polishing the script for Captain America: The First Avenger. Variety also mentioned ever so briefly that Whedon is rewriting The Avengers script that was originally written by Zak Penn. This is fantastic news for everyone who thinks Whedon is a better writer (for TV, movies, and comics) than he is a director, as Pajiba says Marvel brought on Whedon in order for him to help beyond just directing that one movie.

Obviously none of this is confirmed and Marvel probably won't make any official statements for a while, but I have a feeling this is accurate. I've said time and time again that Marvel Studio's President Kevin Feige is one of the smartest execs working in Hollywood and he knows how to find the smartest filmmakers out there. While Whedon doesn't have a lot of experience in feature films (give or take Serenity), he makes up for it in his experience with and knowledge of comics (and all things geek). Therefore, his input will be very valuable to Marvel. He's also great with ensemble casts and multiple characters, which their movies have.

Screenwriter Zak Penn (Behind Enemy Lines, X2, X3, The Grand, The Incredible Hulk) has been working on The Avengers script for years. We ran an article in May of 2007 with a quote from Penn saying 'Avengers is definitely going to happen.' He even once talked about possibly going all CG or 3D with The Avengers back in 2008, since I remember that being a big story at the time. That said, I'm glad someone like Joss Whedon is rewriting his Avengers script, because I think it needs a fresh, new take that I'm hoping Whedon will give it. Whatever the case, I'm still extremely excited for everything coming up from Marvel. Same with you?

Once these Casting Tidbits hit 88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious shit. First up, THR reports Kevin Bacon has joined the cast of the new Steve Carell dramatic vehicle from writer Dan Fogelman, which started out untitled, was suddenly being called Crazy, Stupid Love, and is now back to being untitled. The story centers on Carell, whose wife (Julianne Moore) wants a divorce. To salvage their marriage, he uses a slick life coach (Ryan Gosling) to reform him. Bacon will play a co-worker of Moore's, an alpha male who begins an affair with her. I can definitely seeing Bacon stealing some poor man's wife and loving it.

Next, Variety reports Viola Davis (Doubt) is in talks to star in The Help, the adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett novel of the same name about African-American domestic servants and their wealthy white employers in pre-Civil Rights era Mississippi. Tate Taylor wrote the script and will direct. Davis will play the role of Aibileen, the maid, while Emma Stone is still in talks to play Eugenia Skeeter Phelan a young aspiring writer just home from college who returns home with the intention of writing a tell-all book, fueled by the stories of the servants.

Next up, Production Weekly reports via Twitter that the gorgeous Eva Longoria Parker will star in a supernatural horror film called Tenement which will start shooting next month in New York. Directed by former choreographer Franc. Reyes, the project is said to have comparisons to The Exorcist. From Reyes himself: 'Telling the story of Tenement fuses The Exorcist, Amityville Horror and Rosemary’s Baby.' But we don't know anything else about the story or the project besides those basic details.

And the last tidbit is a big one as Movieline reports Olivia Wilde and Alicia Silverstone have joined the cast of the satirical comedy Butter, while Variety adds that Hugh Jackman has also been tossed into the mix as well. The film tells the story of a young orphan girl who, after being adopted by a Midwestern family, discovers that she has an incredible talent for butter-carving. She eventually finds herself up against the ambitious wife (Garner) of the retired reigning champion in a town's annual butter-sculpting contest.

We're a little confused by the previous casting news because we thought Corddry was taking the role of Garner's husband, but it looks like Ty Burrell is playing the former butter carving champion husband, while Wilde will play his mistress, a tattooed stripper with a Betty Page hairdo. So we're no sure exactly who Corddry's character is in all this. Meanwhile, Jackman portrays an old flame of Garner's character, while Silverstone will play the adoptive mother of a teen girl who becomes a major contender in the butter-carving competition. So there you have it.

Mark Millar is one of the most exciting people working in the entertainment industry today. Millar’s Wanted was made into an action film that grossed over $300 million worldwide and his upcoming film Kick Ass (based on a comic book that he wrote, which was then adapted for the screen by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman) is one of my favorite films of the year so far.

I had the chance to speak with Millar recently, and while I’ve always had a mental image of him as a wildly outspoken comic book writer, loaded with enthusiasm and hyperbole, I was pleasantly surprised to find that he was soft-spoken and absolutely charming. We chatted about how movie studios hated the script for Kick Ass, his thoughts on Christopher Nolan’s work on recent superhero films, his aversion to violence and obscenity, why he doesn’t think his work will ever be adapted to TV, and what it’s like to make a film outside the studio system. There’s always a serious cachet to making a film based on a ‘lost’ story or treatment from a deceased talent. For example, we’ve just been talking about Lunatic at Large, which will be based on a long treatment Jim Thompson wrote for Stanley Kubrick.

Today an old Bruce Lee story is coming back to light. In the late ’60s Lee wrote The Silent Flute, which he conceived with James Coburn (envisioned as Lee’s co-star for the film) and Stirling Silliphant, before it went by the wayside prior to Lee’s death. Cannes 2010 Lineup Announced; Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’ Not on the List: "

Briefly: The lineup for the official selection and out of competition films for this year’s Cannes Film Festival was announced this morning. The big news: Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life is not among the films that will play on the Croisette. That isn’t a huge surprise, as we’ve known the film is still in the editing room and that, while Apparition chief Bob Berney has said it could play Cannes, there has seemed like a good chance it wouldn’t actually make it.

Most of the rest of the films aren’t much of a surprise, and in general this isn’t as exciting a lineup as last year’s. This list doesn’t mean that Tree of Life definitely won’t show up, however, as Variety recently suggested the film could be added at a late date, and the fest’s artistic director remains hopeful. Full 63rd Cannes Film Festival Official Selection Announced: "

The 63nd Cannes Film Festival official selection was just announced this morning. A total of 46 films this year are featured in four categories: Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition and Special Screenings (including those Midnight Screenings). The festival kicks off on May 12th next month and last for 11 days until May 23rd. I will be attending for my second year in a row. It was previously announced that Ridley Scott's Robin Hood would be opening the festival. Highlights from this year's selection include Mike Leigh's Another Year and Jean-Luc Godard's Socialisme among many others. Read on for a full list!

Cannes president Thierry Fremaux did say that the 'official selection is not complete yet' and currently six films are missing, so expect to see a few more added to the line-up before the start of the fest in May.

This looks like a fascinating line-up this year, with a few films I'm excited to see, and a whole bunch that I've never heard of before. Last year had as strong of a selection, including Inglourious Basterds, Fish Tank, Un Prophete, The White Ribbon, Thirst, and the controversial Antichrist (and I was there when it all began). I'm really looking forward to heading out to France in May and I will be joined by first-timer Peter Sciretta from SlashFilm as well as Cannes veteran and my very good friend Eric Lavallee from IONCinema. You're not the only one who doesn't know what's up with wacky that title. Heat Vision reports that remake rights to this Swedish thriller sparked a huge bidding war in Hollywood and it looks like the winner is Zac Efron (also attached to star) and Warner Bros (the home of Efron's new production company) along with producers Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International) of Atlas Ent. Snabba Cash is a new Swedish film based on a novel by Jens Lapidus that follows three interconnected storylines involving drugs and organized crime, and would have Efron as a financial wiz who becomes drug runner.

Apparently the property sparked interest at the Berlin Film Festival. Later, filmmaker Daniel Espinosa and his film were showcased to bring in offers and luckily they poured in like 'snabba cash,' which apparently just means easy money. This project is so in-demand (Universal, Summit, Paramount, Fox, the Weinstein Company, and Mandate were all bidding on it) that the deal has a 'progress to production,' or 'short fuse' clause, which means that if Warner Bros sits on it for too long, the rights will revert back to the producers. But with WB's big move to make Efron their next big action star, I don't think getting this project off the ground with him attached will be too hard. Sound good? Anybody seen the original Snabba Cash?

French Actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey Joins the Cast of Pirates 4: "

Surely there is someone who is disappointed by the fact that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will not be returning for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but there are also still plenty that don't mind, especially with people like Ian McShane coming on-board. Well since there's been recent development on finding a suitable young actor to fill Bloom's shoes as the young heartthrob in the flick, surely there must be a comparable young beauty to fill Knightley's shoes and it looks like Disney found her, as they announced that the young French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey will be making her US feature debut in the sequel.

Astrid has landed the key role of Syrena, a beautiful and alluring young mermaid. A full press release for an actress almost entirely unknown to American audiences is totally unheard of, so she's either such a treasure of France that her working stateside is quite the catch, or Disney really believes she'll be the next big thing. Bergès-Frisbey's credits include the following French films: La Fille du Puisatier, Bruc, Extase, La Premiere Etoile and Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique. This casting of a character who is a mermaid in the movie goes hand in hand with a recent casting call that was looking for professional dancers who are also swimmers.

Disney is certainly pulling out all the stops with trying to cast naturally beautiful women, with the previous casting of Penelope Cruz, and that other casting call that stated they were looking for 'fit' female models who have real breasts (no floaters on these high seas). Anyone familiar with Astrid Berges-Frisbey?

Breaking Bad Recap: Episode 4 “Green Light” Ups the Ante with Dreamy Blue Eyes and Cloudy Blue Meth: "

/Film will be recapping and discussing each episode of the third season of Breaking Bad. A spoiler warning applies after the jump for the recaps and for the comments section. Meth heads welcome. For previous recaps, click here.

In previous recaps, I have discussed the slower pace and subdued tone of season three, and several Slash readers have noticed the slight change as well. The initial episodes haven’t been subpar or boring, but for the non-diehards and for curious surfers, I imagine Walter White’s broodiness and the larger-than-life, some have argued “cartoonish,” enigma of the Cousins is off-putting. But overall, the season’s kick-off is realistic. Figurative dust continues to settle after season two’s finale, and several main characters have used the shadow of tragedy to privately search and await a sign, an epiphany, or any justification to grasp at what he or she selfishly desires most.

Aptly titled, “Green Light,” the fourth episode shoves these characters’ ambitions and longings forward, and fans may have noticed the writers lacing the ep with the humor and foreshadowing that hooked us back when Walt still had hair/manners. After the jump, I’ll cease saying anything further about next week’s episode, but I will say it’s even better than “Green Light.” Season three’s slow burn is about to ignite into a highway to hell. (Yay?)

Twilight Sequel Eclipse Gets Reshoots, But Summit Says Reports of Hardwicke and Weitz Contact are False: "

It’s been a hell of a day for rumors and doom and gloom reports. There is word that Sony isn’t happy with The Green Hornet, and that Warner Bros. is rather down on The Losers (about which I’ve heard good things) and Jonah Hex, which has led to a disinterest in pursuing Lobo. (According to Anne Thompson, Sony called the Green Hornet report ‘complete garbage’ and ‘unfounded.’)

Then there was a report that said Summit was about to embark on reshoots for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Not a serious deal, because reshoots happen all the time and are often planned into the schedule and budget. But in this case, the rumor said that Eclipse director David Slade would not be involved, and that Summit is reaching out to prior Twilight directors Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz to handle the reshoot.

This looks awesome! If you read up about the Tron Legacy viral event at WonderCon a few weeks ago, you may have heard that Alan Bradley announced that the original Space Paranoids game would soon become an online playable game. If you thought that was just part of the stunt, guess again, as FlynnLives.com has just been updated with an awesome new teaser trailer (you can watch it below) for the actual online playable Space Paranoids game. Yes, once this is released online it's going to consume endless hours of your life until this December when Tron Legacy finally lands in theaters. You've been warned… but check this out anyway!

If you remember back to Comic-Con last year, Flynn's Arcade had about 10 or so arcade units running this exact game with an old school joystick. So they've had the game for a while, and now Encom has created an online version of it. You can bet there will be some new viral events that will come with this, as Bradley said in San Francisco that there'll be '15 new levels in Space Paranoids designed by Kevin Flynn himself,' which means that Flynn is probably going to 'contact' us through the game (part of the ARG concept). The only bad news is that they don't list a release date. I've got to imagine it'll be up and running soon, right?

As we get closer to the announcement of the Cannes lineup for this year (that hits tomorrow) there aren’t a huge number of films I’m already excited to see. But a few already stand out. I Love You, Phillip Morris , directed by Bad Santa writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, was bought a while after Sundance ‘09, then had release dates pushed back a couple times, then was taken off the release schedule, then put back on.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which originally saw life as a TV show in the mid-’60s, has long been in the Hollywood remake pile. Back in 2004 or 2005 Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn was set to direct, but dropped out to make another film that eventually didn’t happen. (He made Stardust instead.)

Marvel has officially announced (no more rumors!) that British actress Hayley Atwell (seen above) has been cast as Peggy Carter in Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger (notice the new title, too?). Deadline has posted the press release, which doesn't reveal a single bit of new information besides Atwell's casting. The 28 year old actress beat out other British talent like Keira Knightley, Alice Eve, and Emily Blunt (mentioned here) for the breakout role. In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America while fighting together during the war. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Read on!

Although Atwell has been in films like Cassandra's Dream, Brideshead Revisited, and The Duchess, this is the first time I've heard of her, so I don't have much to say. I'm glad to see that Joe Johnston is finalizing his cast for this film. Besides Chris Evans as Cap, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, we haven't heard about any other casting. I wonder how many other roles are left to fill? Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe which is when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

While we're very nonchalant with our distaste for The Twilight Saga, it's never really satisfying to have a film suffer production woes. After dealing with some sketchy comments from director David Slade (which he has since renounced) before he was brought onto the third installment, Eclipse, there's been rumblings of a poor creative relationship between Slade and Summit. Now comes word (via The Playlist) from Lainey Gossip (who Playlist says is reliable) that a few key scenes and fight sequences need reshoots and Summit may potentially bring in previous franchise directors Catherine Hardwicke and/or Chris Weitz instead.

This isn't entirely an off the wall move, as there appeared to be some issues with Slade's work on the third installment as early last month. There's no reason to think there are any negative connotations behind this, however EW reported last month editor Art Jones (who has worked with Slade before) was replaced with Nancy Richardson, who worked on the first film. Apparently producers wanted stronger edit from someone with Twilight experience. Sounds similar to the issues Universal had with The Wolfman, and while this isn't meant to reflect poorly on Slade's work, it doesn't sound like things have been going that well with Summit.

Lainey's source says Slade's working relationship with Summit has had numerous creative differences, and apparently it has deteriorated so much that the production company decided to consider other options for reshoots that will require Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson to work long hours. They say Hardwicke seems a more likely choice as she is currently in Vancouver (where the reshoots would take place) working on pre-production for The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, and that she has even been scouting out studio locations for the reshoots (though she could just as easily be looking for these things for Red Riding Hood).

However, it looks like Slade and Summit may be working things out anyway, and the director could just as easily be brought back in the en anywayd. For now take this news with a grain of salt as a big gossipy rumor, but stay tuned to see if anything else happens. Seems to be a lot of reshoots going on nowadays. Thoughts?

Marvel has finally found an actress to play the lead female role in Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain America. 28-year old British actress Hayley Atwell will play the Captain’s World War II girlfriend Peggy Carter.

As you might recall, a couple weeks back it was reported that Marvel Studios was testing British actresses for the role, including Alice Eve, Keira Knightley and Emily Blunt. Eve was said to be Marvel’s top choice for the role after Blunt passed. Not sure what happened but HeatVision is reporting that Atwell clinched the role after screen testing in London last week.

I don’t think there’s been a more divisive movie in the past year than Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void. It premiered (in hastily finished form) at Cannes last year and has done festival circuits since. IFC bought the film for US distribution, but before it opens here it is getting a real release in France, which is the reason for the trailer we have today. Writers turned producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Alias, Transformers, Star Trek) have put together a pitch for a thriller set in an airport and set it in motion at DreamWorks. The key element of the equation is their partner in the pitch: screenwriter Jeremy Slater, whose work has ended up on the Black List (Score, in 2007) and has a couple other scripts in development. (Pet and My Spy.)

I’ve known Slater for years and love his work — he’s genuinely funny and a great writer. Kurtzman and Orci, OK, not my favorites, but you’d figure that if any producers are going to let a writer’s good ideas through, it’ll be those two, right? THR doesn’t offer any more details, other than the fact that Mathew Cullen is attached to direct.

So maybe those rumors of Jamie Foxx writing Laverne & Shirley were a little out there, but the guy is all over the place right now. For instance, in addition to working on a new sketch comedy show and having a role in Kane & Lynch, Foxx will produce, score and voice a character in the Fox Animation film Welcome to the Jungle, based on a pitch by Foxx and Malcolm Spellman.

The latter is writing the script, and while the studio isn’t revealing much about the story (that won’t last long) there is this quote dangled to suggest…well, something: “Life is a jungle and welcome to it.” [Variety]

I don't what the hell this is, but holy crap it's trippy! Apple has debuted the official trailer for an indie film called Malice in Wonderland that is, no doubt, inspired by Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland. This stars Maggie Grace as Alice, who you might know better as Liam Neeson's daughter in Taken. Okay, okay, I know, before you start asking me why the heck I'm even featuring this, there's a few simple reasons. First, it's so insanely wacky that I just had to share it with all of you! Second, I have quite a crush on Maggie Grace (she's 26) and she looks pretty damn good in this. If you're looking for a very weird trailer, this is it!

A modern take on Lewis Carroll's classic fairytale, Alice in Wonderland, set in the North East of England.

Malice in Wonderland is directed by British filmmaker Simon Fellows of a few other low budget flicks like the horror film Blessed as well as Second in Command and Until Death, both with Van Damme. The script was written by Fellows' writer Jayson Rothwell, also of Second in Command and Until Death. This was shot in 2008 in the UK and played at the Sitges Festival. Magnolia Pictures is bringing Malice in Wonderland to limited theaters in the US starting on April 16th this same month. So, is anybody interested in seeing this?

Only 23 more days left (although all of Europe gets it an entire week before us)! To continue building more last minute hype for Marvel's Iron Man 2, I'm posting four international character posters that hit earlier today on EcranLarge. We already saw the Tony Stark one last year, but there's new ones for Whiplash, War Machine, Black Widow and even Pepper Potts. There's also an awesome new Chinese TV spot for Iron Man 2 (via The Playlist) that doesn't feature much new footage, but the CGI does look a lot more finished, and boy does this movie look sleek. Check out Stark's crazy new triangular arc reactor, too! Find all of it below.

Iron Man 2 takes place only six months after Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) revealed his identity as Iron Man at the end of the first movie. Mickey Rourke stars as a powerful new Russian villain named Whiplash.

Iron Man 2 is directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Jon Favreau, who previously directed Made, Elf, Zathura, and the first Iron Man. The screenplay for this was also written by an actor, Justin Theroux, who became a screenwriter a few years ago and co-wrote the Tropic Thunder script. Paramount will be bringing Iron Man 2 to theaters everywhere starting on May 7th, 2010 this summer. See everyone in theaters in May for this!

Anyone who has seen Iron Man knows about the little easter egg “button” that was included at the conclusion of the credits, which featured Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury telling Tony Stark about a new group he is putting together. This scene was rumored in the weeks leading up to release, but most everyone wrote it off as wild fanboy rumors. Marvel went so far as having the scene excluded from the early press screenings of the film so that it would be a surprise when fans saw the film at release.

Of course, we’ve suspected that Iron Man 2 will likely be no different. Speculation/Details will be kept after the jump, for those who want to be free of possible spoilers.

Last month, it was revealed that Steven Spielberg was shepherding yet another film as producer, a film titled Jackie, a Noah Oppenheim script based on the life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. At the time it was reported that HBO was the most interested party, and that Jackie could be developed as a cable movie project for them. Apparently things have since gotten a lot more interesting. Spielberg is actually not involved, and the project is not going to be a made for premium television movie.

Could the 450ft-long iconic Hollywood sign which stands proudly on the land overlooking Los Angeles be turned into a boutique hotel?

You might have heard that the land around the famous Hollywood sign was put on the market two years ago. The non-profit Public Trust For Lands group, fearing that the land would be bought by developers who would put advertising or build luxury homes on it, launched a campaign to buy the 138-acre area above the sign known as Cahuenga Peak. The group secured an option which gave them until April 14th to raise the money, and we still don’t know the result. A couple days ago they were $3 million short of the total needed to secure the property.

A Danish architect named Christian Bay-Jorgensen has come up with an idea to turn the sign into a hotel, which in effect would/could solve all the money/land issues. The plan calls for the famous letters to be enlarged to double the size, building them out from the back, allowing guests to stay inside the Hollywood sign itself. The crazy idea isn’t as bad as it might first appear.

We have yet to really cover this project, so now is probably the time. Last year an interactive art project was launched called Star Wars Unut. The idea was to recreate Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope using 472 15 second fan recreated scenes. Fans that participated recreated a 15 second segment of the film any way they wanted to. Some filmmakers submitted their own Be King Rewind-style Sweded video reproductions, while others recreated scenes using various forms of animation and photography.You can watch some of the clips on the StarWarsUncut website right now.

The plan has aways been to edit all of these segments back together in a fan created remake of the original Star Wars film. That time is now. Star Wars Uncut will premiere in Copenhagen at CPH:PIX Festival on April 19th and the project organizers claim that have several screenings in New York City in the works. To celebrate the upcoming premiere they have released a five minute segment of the film, a teaser they call “The Escape”. You can watch that video now after the jump.

Apparently there's more to this story than we first thought. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Rachel Weisz will be playing the late First Lady Jackie Kennedy in a new project titled simply Jackie that's about the immediate days following President Kennedy's assassination in 1963. You may remember hearing about this recently when it was reported that Steven Spielberg was shopping around this spec script, written by Noah Oppenheim, but Spielberg isn't involved. EW says 'that is not correct and Spielberg is not involved in any way.' Instead, they say Weisz' husband Darren Aronofsky will direct and produce the film. Whoa!

EW says that Protozoa Pictures (Aronofsky's company) is developing along with Scott Franklin. The project is currently being shopped around to major studios, which makes me wonder if Aronofsky just put his name down as a director to attract interest, not as a sure sign that he will be directing this. The story focuses on the four days between the assassination and his burial, 'showing the beloved [Jackie] Kennedy at both her most vulnerable and her most graceful.' If the script is good enough to get both Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky involved, it must be incredible. No matter what Aronofsky directs, I'm interested, so I'm excited to see him take a project like this, especially with Wiesz, who I'm sure will deliver a powerful performance.

As we know, Darren is currently in post-production on Black Swan, the crazy ballet thriller starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. It's hard to tell which film will be Aronofsky's next (RoboCop? Serena?) but we'll be sure to keep you updated on all things Aronofsky as well as all things Jackie. Thoughts on this project?

In March, we broke news that Paramount Pictures and Roth Films were developing a movie using John Hughes‘ unproduced screenplay Grisby’s Go Broke. Paramount later denied the rumor (which probably means they considered the property, but decided not to), but I’ve been itching to get my hands on Hughes original script to see an unmade Hughes movie that never was. And now we have some more details about that script, and the upcoming stoner-sequel A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.

Not too long ago, Martin Scorsese somewhat dangerously proclaimed his love for the potential of 3D by saying, in so many words, that a movie like Precious should be seen in 3D. While I think this is a bit of an overzealous claim for a technology that is still being mastered by some of the best filmmakers, it certainly has promise as long as we all heed Uncle Ben's words: 'With great power comes great responsibility.' Now Scorsese will put his money where his mouth is as Variety confirms that he will shoot his adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret in 3D. For those 3D haters, it could be worse - he could have converted to 3D.

Based on the children's book of the same name, the story will take Scorsese and his cast back to 1930's Paris, France, where the story centers on a 12-year-old orphan named Hugo who lives in a train station and is still dedicated to his late father's ambition to solve the mystery of a broken robot. Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Kinglsey have already been cast in the film as the station inspector and the famous real-life silent filmmaker, George Melies, who plays a pivotal role in the story. No doubt, plenty of people are interested in seeing how a director like Scorsese, who is no stranger to violence and darkness, will tackle family friendly fare (in 3D). I suppose we'll find out when this hits theaters in December of 2011. Is anyone upset by this decision?

For some reason, at the end of last month, we missed reporting news of young British actor Alex Pettyfer joining DJ Caruso's adaptation of the upcoming young-adult science fiction book, I Am Number Four, by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. The actor will be playing playing the title role of Four, one of nine aliens who escape their home planet before its annihilation by a rival species and hide out on Earth disguised as human high schoolers, only to discover they're still being hunted by their enemy. Now Heat Vision is reporting that Sharlto Copley, who had his breakthrough last year in District 9, has also joined the cast in a pivotal role.

Copley (who also looks to be enjoying his newfound fame with some ridiculous action in this summer's The A-Team) will play a man who hailed from the alien world's serving class but now is the title character's adult guardian and mentor. The story is being adapted by Al Gough and Miles Millar ('Smallville' creators) from a planned six-book series, with the first installment being published sometime in fall. Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay are producing, so this project has some heavy hitters behind it. The concept, which is almost like a reverse of The Faculty, certainly sounds fascinating and I can't wait to hear who else joins the cast.

Quite possibly one of the coolest achievements for any actor is to have themselves transformed into some sort of animated character. It looks like Jamie Foxx will be the next actor to live that dream for the first time in his career as Variety reports he and Fox Animation are collaborating on an animated flick, in which he will also star, called Welcome to the Jungle, based on an original pitch from Foxx and writer Malcolm Spellman. The only hint at the film's storyline is the tagline: 'Life is a jungle and welcome to it.' It looks like this might be more of a musical geared animated flick with Foxx writing original music for the feature, too.

It also sounds like Foxx may be pulling an Eddie Murphy in taking on multiple roles/voices for the project as Spellman (who will also write the script) says the film is 'built to utilize Jamie's talent with voices and as a musician.' Of course Jamie Foxx is no stranger to comedy (though it may not have always been good) as the actor started his career on the sketch show 'In Living Color,' and had his own sitcom 'The Jamie Foxx Show' way before he headed down the dramatic road with roles like Ray and Collateral. Since it's animated, it will probably be quite awhile before we see this one hit theaters, but stay tuned as this project develops.

Back in March,Academy Award-winning filmmaker and historian Martin Scorsese announced his approval of Digital 3D filmmaking, stating “We see in depth, for the most part. We go to the theater — it’s in depth. Why couldn’t a film like `Precious’ be in 3-D? It should be.” Scorsese even admitted that he’d love to make a 3D film himself.

And it was only a few months earlier, we heard that Scorsese’s next film might be an adaptation of Brian Selznick’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret (one of the projects that has been on the director’s slate since 2007). For the last few months, it has been rumored that Scorsese might be making the 3D plunge with Hugo Cabret. But Variety now confirms that this will be a 3D production.

The casting info continues to pour in for Jim Field Smith’s political satire called Butter. There’s already quite a lineup: Jennifer Garner, Rob Corddry, Ty Burrell, Ashley Greene and more. Now Olivia Wilde (Tron Legacy) has been added, as has Alicia Silverstone.

But there’s some confusion. Movieline reports that Wilde is cast as a tattooed stripper (with Betty Page bangs, no less) who is mistress to a butter-carving champion played by Ty Burrell. But previously we’d heard that Rob Corddry was playing that role. Figuring that one out. Meanwhile, the wife of said champion, played by Jennifer Garner, decides to take the crown for herself, and must best a young girl played by Yara Shahidi. Silverstone will be the adoptive mother of the girl. As mentioned before this is a satirical analog for the 2008 Democratic Iowa caucus. But am I the only one reminded of Diablo Cody based on the description of the stripper character ?

Back in 2007, it was announced that Jake Gyllenhaal would play football quarterback Joe Namath in a feature film about his life that was being put together. Jump to today and, well, no progress has been made. However, Pajiba says they've heard that James Mangold (of Kate & Leopold, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight & Day) may have just landed this directing gig, which makes them (and us) wonder if Universal may actually be trying to get this into production as Gyllenhaal's next big film following Duncan Jones' Source Code (which he is already shooting). It all makes sense, and I won't be surprised if this actually happens.

The project was originally setup with David Hollander ('Heartland', 'The Cleaner') attached to write the screenplay. Namath himself approved of the movie after a 'strong pitch' from Hollander and a belief that the 'athletic' Gyllenhaal was the right actor to play him. This is an approval that the studio doesn't want to let go of, which is probably why they're keeping Gyllenhaal out in front while moving forward. Universal does want to take another pass at David Hollander's script before it moves into production, though, and knowing them this means it could probably get shelved just as quickly, especially if the budget is too high.

Joe Namath was one of the first football players to achieve a 'rock star' status in the NFL. This biopic will tell the story of how the golden-armed kid from Beaver Falls, PA became 'Broadway Joe,' the New York Jets quarterback who became a '60s cultural figure. 'Most of the stuff you saw in Forest Gump, Joe lived through all of it,' producer and friend Jimmy Walsh said about Namath and his life. Namath played for 11 years with the New York Jets, from 1965 to 1976, and was the first to pass more than 4,000 yards one season. Wait, wait, wait - Stanley Kubrick had a long lost project? Apparently so. The film is called Lunatic at Large and is based on a treatment by pulp author Jim Thompson that was commissioned by Kubrick in the late 1950s, after the two worked together on The Killing and Paths Of Glory. The script was discovered the a few years ago (read a NY Times article on it) and has been floating around for at least a few years. However, Production Weekly is reporting today on their Twitter (via The Playlist) that both Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell are attached to star in Lunatic at Large. They've got a few good actors for now. Read on!

Set in New York in 1956, Lunatic at Large tells the story of Johnnie Sheppard, an ex-carnival worker with serious anger-management issues, and Joyce, a nervous, attractive barfly he picks up from a Hopperesque tavern scene. It's described as 'a dark and surprising mystery' about a person who is 'the true escapee from a nearby mental hospital.' Kubrick was supposed to follow up Spartacus with this, but the only copy of the manuscript was lost and later found in his library. The latest draft of the script was finished by Stephen R. Clarke in 2006, but we don't know too much else, including production details (when will it start shooting?).

It's not surprising that Johansson and Rockwell were interested in this. Any and everyone in Hollywood is probably jumping at the opportunity to work on a project that has the late Stanley Kubrick's name attached, even if it's just as a writer. If it's true that both actors have signed on, I'm sure a director is close behind, as they wouldn't be this far along without one. Chris Palmer has been attached since 2006, but no word if he's still involved at this point. This sounds like it could be a great project with touch of Kubrick, who hasn't left any mark on the big screen since Eyes Wide Shut in 1999. We'll keep you updated best we can. Stay tuned!

I've been waiting to see Paul Verhoeven return to his 'roots' with more insanely violent action flicks like those he used to make back in the 80s and 90s, but that hasn't happened yet. Last we heard, Verhoeven was supposed to working on a thriller called Surrogate, but not anymore. MTV talked with Verhoeven recently who told them: "I am working on a movie now that is… situated in 1914. We are scripting it. It's an idea that exists already… from another medium, and so we are making it now into a film narrative." He wouldn't say the name, but did confirm that it's a video game that they're adapting the script from. So what could it be?

Verhoeven adds that the story is 'basically, Indiana Jones-ish you could say, but also Hitchcockian.' Well that's no help. How many games can you even think of that are set in 1914? Peter from SlashFilm seems to think it could be an old 1997 PC game called The Last Express, a real-time adventure game created by Jordan Mechner, the same guy who recently broke into Hollywood with Prince of Persia (he created that game and also wrote the script). The game takes place on the Orient Express days before the start of WWI and was even described at the time as 'a mix of Indiana Jones and Alfred Hitchcock.' We've got a winner!

So Verhoeven is finally returning to the war genre again, or at least he's adapting an adventure video game that's set entirely on a train (I think?) in 1914 before WWI. Sounds like a very unique concept and as long as it's as crazy violent and fun as Verhoeven's work from the 80's and 90's, then I'm in. I don't think Verhoeven has lost his touch recently, he just hasn't been working on any movies that are as risky and, to be honest, as entertaining as his earlier work. And whenever I re-watch an old Verhoeven movie, I always hope that we'll see more like it again soon. Has anyone played The Last Express? Will it make for a good movie?

This a fanboy dream come true. I don't think anyone thought they'd ever wake up and read a headline saying that Joss Whedon, the geek creator of TV shows like 'Buffy' and 'Firefly', would be directing the first big superhero team-up movie to ever hit the big screen - The Avengers. Deadline has confirmed the big news of the day: 'Marvel Studios is in final negotiations for Joss Whedon to direct Marvel Studios' The Avengers.' Earlier this month, it was rumored that Whedon was on the shortlist to direct, but no one seemed to believe it would actually happen. Joss Whedon's The Avengers will hit theaters the first weekend of May in 2012.

Fleming lists a few confirmed superheroes that will be a part of the team: Iron Man ((Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and SHIELD agent Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson). 'Other signature superheroes' will be involved, but haven't been announced yet. Whedon's background is perfect for this movie, as he's worked at Marvel before, specifically on the Astonishing X-Men series and a number of other comics. This is most certainly surprising news, but definitely good news. If there's anyone who'll be able to handle an immense cast of superheroes, it's Joss Whedon. I just hope he doesn't cast Eliza Dushku in this. What do you think of this? Will Joss Whedon do a good job with The Avengers?

On April Fool’s Day, IESB had the bad timing to report that Joss Whedon was on the shortlist to direct The Avengers for Marvel. Really bad timing for that scoop — while Whedon is the sort of guy a lot of fans would like to see on this film, there was too much reason to be skeptical when it ran on April 1. The LA Times confirmed that shortlist a few days later, but even then it was tough to tell if the studio was serious, or just spitballing in the same way it seemed to do with the Captain America casting.

20th Century Fox has released a new featurette for the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimrod Antal-directed Predators. You’ve seen the introductory featurette, the teaser trailer, and the featurette focusing on Adrien Brody’s character Royce. The new featurette is more of an interview Q&A with Rodriguez and Antal, explaining why they made a new Predators movie, and now they approached it - the casting, the characters, the special effects, the story and more.

I still think it’s hilarious how they put Rodriguez front and center, and Antal only chimes in a couple times. You would think that Rodriguez directed this film himself, and Antal produced it. But it makes perfect sense — Rodriguez is a natural salesman and knows how to sell a movie. Watch the three and a half minute video, embedded after the jump.

Paul Verhoeven, a director best known for films like Robocop, Starship Troopers, Total Recall and Basic Instinct, hasn’t stepped behind the camera for a few years (2006’s Black Book). But is now appears the filmmaker is developing a big screen adaptation of a video game. The filmmaker told MTV:

“I am working on a movie now that is… situated in 1914. Basically, Indiana Jones-ish you could say, but also Hitchcockian. We are scripting it. It’s an idea that exists already… from another medium, and so we are making it now into a film narrative.” Which medium, Josh asked. “A game, a video game.”

MTV was unable to figure out which video game Verhoeven was talking about, but I think I may have cracked the code.

PIRATE RADIO

Pirate Radio—also known by its original, less insipid title, The Boat That Rocked—really wants you to like it. It’s an exuberant, rowdy dose of Rock ‘n’ Roll silliness, sloppily but enjoyably slapped together with a continuous stream of classic ’60s tunes blasting in the background. It’s also an entirely inconsequential affair, lacking any real desire to thoughtfully tackle the historical significance or impact of illegal radio stations in Europe, or even approach its near dozen subplots with the slightest bit of honest emotion or genuine character interaction. And frankly, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, so long as all you’re looking for is a rollicking bit of escapist fun. It’s the sort of movie where one of its antagonists—the right-hand man to a stuffy government minister who hates all things considered cool or fun—has the name Twat, and is repeatedly referred to as such. That should suitably demonstrate the level of depth we’re talking about here.

Our very first introduction to Robert Rodriguez & Nimrod Antal's Predators was through a sneak peek featurette, so it's only fitting we follow up the trailer with yet another new featurette. The video comes from Germany (via YouTube) but isn't dubbed, so it is watchable and in high def, too. It mainly contains some interview segments with Rodriguez and Antal as well as some new footage, including dialogue from Danny Trejo. I totally love the Japanese guy too, I can't wait to see him fight with his samurai sword, that will be badass to watch. The more I see from this, the more excited I get, I think it looks like it could be awesome.

Predators is being directed by Nimród Antal, of Kontroll, Vacancy, and Armored previously. The screenplay was co-written by newcomers Michael Finch and Alex Litvak and is based on early draft written years ago by producer Robert Rodriguez, who also worked with them on the script. This is a reboot of the Predator series created by Jim & John Thomas and directed by John McTiernan in 1987. We're not sure what the actual plot is, but all we need to know is that it's about a bunch of badass elite warriors who fight a bunch of predators out in the jungle. 20th Century Fox is bringing Predators to theaters worldwide on July 7th this summer.

This Week on Netflix Instant: Moon, Clash of the Titans, More: "

Sadly, this week brings another barren installment of new releases on Netflix Instant (only 3 of the titles are new this week), and it looks like it's all because there's a ridiculously huge addition of various 'Barney' and 'Thomas the Train Engine' programming being added to the library, so if you have kids who like purple dinosaurs and blue trains, then this week is your week. But if you happen to like Sam Rockwell, younger Jeff Goldblum and Jim Carrey, the Coen Brothers and/or a small selection of films that are getting contemporary updates, then you might enjoy this week's other select titles just the same. So what's in our queue this week?

Moon (Available Now):

One of the best films of 2009 (it's definitely in my Top 10 of last year), and one of a handful of film that made science fiction a force to be reckoned with, this debut film from director Duncan Jones doesn't try to show-off, but very subtly presents a somewhat high concept character based story with Sam Rockwell turning in an Oscar-worthy performance (though he, the film and Jones were all snubbed by the Academy) as astronaut Sam Bell and a clone of himself who are confused and bewildered by the others existence on a lunar base mining a precious resource for Earth. Since it's so easy to watch now, you have no excuse to miss it.

We Live in Public (Available Now):

Ironic that this film is now available online, as the subject of the story is essentially the internet itself and the effect the web is having on our society, as seen through the eyes of 'the greatest internet pioneer you've never heard of:' Josh Harris. In the world of Twitter, Facebook and countless blogs on cooking, clothing, music, television and *gulp* movies, the documentary is a cautionary tale of the direction our society is headed as technology and the virtual world that has stemmed from it begins to take over our lives. A definite must watch for anyone who spends time online.

Planet of the Apes (Available Now):

With a prequel/reboot on the way relatively soon, why not take a journey into the past to check out the film that started the primate revolution? The classic film has the late Charlton Heston as one of three astronauts marooned on a futuristic planet where apes rule and humans are slaves. The apes, which now talk and walk upright, have created a system of classes and politics creating many sociological themes reminiscent of human history that eventually prove to be more than familiar when Heston finally ends up on a beach in one of most iconic scenes in cinema history.

Clash of the Titans (Available Now):

Instead of wasting your money on a shitty 3-D converted crapfest currently in theaters, check out the campy original starring Harry Hamlin, Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, and Burgess Meredith along with Ray Harryhausen's cherished special effects which were actually the last to grace the screen before his retirement from the industry. The story, which was mostly respected in the remake, has Cassiopeia comparing her daughter's beauty to that of Hera. Angered, the queen of the gods (rather than Liam Neeson's Zeus) has Poseidon unleash the monstrous beast Craken to destroy their village unless Cassiopeia's daughter, Andromeda, is sacrificed.

Arthur (Available Now):

With a Russell Brand led remake in the works, what better time to enjoy a truly great comedy of the past with the late Dudley Moore as Arthur, a very rich, drunken ne'er-do-well, falls in love with a working-class shoplifter just as he is scheduled to marry a properly pedigreed society member. But if he doesn't marry the heiress, he will not inherit a $750 million trust. Liza Minelli is along for the ride which has Moore in his finest and most well-remembered performance as he enjoys the fruits of wealth including limousines, prostitutes, train sets and tuna sandwiches.

The Comedians of Comedy (Available Now):

There's plenty of stand-up specials out here, but with this documentary that was actually produced by Netflix, we're given an inside look into the mind of four comedians as they set out on a tour not too dissimilar from many indie rock bands going across the country, playing intimate, underground venues. Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford and Zach Galifianakis are the Comedians of Comedy, on-tour and on-camera for a hilarious documentary which not only features stellar stand-up, but revealing looks into the craft of comedy, including exactly what shapes a comedian's jokes and style.

Earth Girls Are Easy (Available Now):

After crash-landing in Los Angeles' dreadful San Fernando Valley, three colorful aliens (played by a very young Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans) befriend manicurist Valerie (Geena Davis) and her boss (Julie Brown), who give the threesome makeovers and take them out for a night at the town. This is a low budget, almost spoof-level film taking aim at the Valley, MTV culture, and science fiction, so don't expect to be blown away, but stay for the laughs, as there are plenty.

The Man Who Wasn't There (Available April 16th):

An approach to film noir that only the Coen Brothers can deliver has Billy Bob Thornton in Santa Rosa, California, circa 1949 as a slow-moving, barely talking barber who doesn't seem to want much out of life. He has virtually no relationship with his wife, Doris (Frances McDormand), who has more fun with her boss, Big Dave (James Gandolfini). But when a strange character (Jon Polito) lets it be known that he's looking for a silent partner to finance his dream business (something he calls dry cleaning), he sees a possible way out of his doldrums. In what is essentially a respectful spoof of film noir, the Coen's deliver another underrated film like we've come to expect from them.

If you didn't already know, Danny McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green now have their own recently founded production company called Rough House Pictures, and Variety reports they've added a new project to their roster as they will produce the film Taking Flight: The Hunt for a Young Outlaw based on the nefarious activities of Colton Harris-Moore (seen above), one of the most infamous Frank-Abagnale-worthy teen criminals, known as 'The Barefoot Burglar,' who has been seen on more than a few news outlets in his successful evasion of police and FBI in the theft of cars, boats and even planes (see Time). Holy shit, right?

The teen is still at large, has taunted authorities, and has a huge Facebook following as well. He is a suspect in more than 100 crimes, mostly felonies, in the Pacific Northwest since escaping from a juvenile facility in 2008. Harris-Moore was dubbed 'The Barefoot Burglar' after being seen running barefoot from the scene of a crime. Rough House is looking for writers to pen the script for this project, which is anticipated to be a directing gig for David Gordon Green (Snow Angels, Pineapple Express). But with no script yet, and the project still only in the very early in development stage, anything could happen. Still, stay tuned to see how this project ripped straight from the headlines plays out both in the industry, and in real life. Sound good?

Story Details Emerge for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas: "

Story isn't the most important part of a comedy that is fueled by dick and weed jokes, but it's interesting to find out where the titular characters of A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas find themselves, and what kind of shenanigans they'll encounter in the holiday season. Luckily Vulture got their hands on a recent draft of the script which, as John Cho revealed recently, finds the smoked out duo estranged as Harold is a married, drug-free, Wall Street executive living in a home that looks 'like a house in a Nancy Myers movie' while Kumar is single, living in the man-cave with his medical license suspended for smoking marijuana.

It's not as if a spoiler for this kind of movie is a big concern, but if you want to go into this completely blind, read no further, as there are mild spoilers ahead regarding the adventures Harold & Kumar will have this go-round courtesy of writers and franchise creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg and recently hired director Todd Strauss Schulson. At the script's beginning its been a long time since these friends have seen each other, but the duo is reunited when a package, intended for Harold, arrives at their old apartment and Kumar delivers it to his house. While there, in a pot-related mishap, Kumar burns down a Christmas tree grown special by Harold's father-in-law, requiring the two to venture out in search of a worthy replacement.

What follows are more of the wacky misadventures we expect, including waffle-making robots, a drug-taking baby, the return of Neil Parick Harris hosting a Christmas special with Kelly Ripa, and even a psycho-active eggnog induced five-page claymation sequence with a giant evil snowman chasing them through Manhattan (which I hope takes on the form of the old animated Christmas specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). This sequence is one of the driving forces behind a desire to actual shoot the movie in 3-D rather than the shitty conversion method everyone has been hating on, but who knows what will happen.

I've gotta say, as overexposed as 3-D is becoming, a stoner comedy should be able to utilize the technology in so many great ways, especially because its audience will also probably be high as the Christmas Star in Rockefeller Center. The only sad news is that this sequel won't see release this year after all, but will have to wait until holiday season in 2011 or 2012. Anyone liking the sound of this smoked out holiday fun?

Last October we reported that Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer was in the running to direct the new musical adaptation of the 1984 film Footloose, starring Chace Crawford and Julianne Hough, after Kenny Ortega decided to leave the project. Variety has confirmed that he will be directing, but the project may not be good to go just yet as EW's Hollywood Insider says Crawford has backed out of the role Kevin Bacon played in the original, and the studio will probably cast an unknown, launching a nationwide search for the role. This doesn't bode well for a remake that doesn't seem all that necessary to begin with anyway.

Sources say that it was the 'Gossip Girl' shooting schedule that created conflicts, but you would think this would've been worked out well before they brought him on board. His departure might have something to do with the fact that most everything has changed in the project's development since he signed on. Brewer was also hired to work on a rewrite (prompting the studio to throw out a previous re-write from Erin Brockovich writer Susannah Grant) which is apparently closer in story to the original story about a town that outlawed dance and music. Part of me thinks if this were a remake set in Afghanistan around the mid 90's, this would be one hell of a bold musical, but that's just not in the cards. Does anyone care about this film at all?

As much as the /Filmcast crew and I want one, we might not ever get a sequel to How To Train Your Dragon. Although, that movie is proving to have legs at the box office, dropping only 14% in its third weekend of release. I guess that might be enough for Hollywood to think they’ve figured out the next great thing - people must love Dragons. And as soon as the mainstream crowds get tired of the aliens phase, they’ll need something to fill the void.

Eagle Eye scribe Travis Wright has been hired to pen an adaptation of Here, There Be Dragons and The Search for the Red Dragon, the first two books in James A. Owen’s popular young-adult fantasy book series The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica. The Gotham Group is producing the first two feature adaptations with Rick Porras, co-producer of The Lord of the Rings trilogy (which makes sense if you read more into this adaptation).

This could either end up being the best or the worst decision Universal has made recently, it all depends on how it turns out in the end. Deadline reports that Universal has acquired a new Seth MacFarlane project called Ted, an R-rated comedy about 'a man and his teddy bear.' The film has a $65 million budget and will mix live action and CG. MacFarlane will also co-star (in the live-action role?) and provide the voice for the CG-generated title character. Media Rights Capital developed the project and is in the midst of selling it to Uni. I'm wondering why Fox, who seems to really like working with MacFarlane, didn't pick this up first?

For all the Family Guy fans curious about a Family Guy theatrical movie, word is that still hasn't come to fruition yet and Ted will get made before it anyway. Universal wants MacFarlane to get this into production this year, probably aiming for a late 2011 or early 2012 release, if it starts on time. MacFarlane helped write the 'hard R' script with Family Guy cohorts Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. I don't know about this yet, it could be good, it could be bad, it all depends on what the character looks like, how the film comes together, if it's actually funny, and so on. I'm hoping for the best, but you never know. What do you guys think?
