Brad Bird Might Direct Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 4!

Brad Bird

Although we'd been hoping he would eventually get a greenlight to direct his live-action earthquake movie 1906, apparently The Incredibles and Ratatouille director might take on another live-action mission first. Heat Vision is reporting that former Pixar director Brad Bird is now one of a few 'contenders' to direct Mission: Impossible 4 being produced by J.J. Abrams and set to star Tom Cruise for his fourth time. The trade site obviously isn't confirming that he's the one who has the job, mentioning that they've been meeting with others like Ruben Fleischer and Edgar Wright, but it's possible Bird may end up directing this sequel.

Unfortunately, Heat Vision doesn't really say anything else, at all, which makes this a frustrating story to report. I hate all these speculative news stories - I wish we could just tell you for sure that it will be Brad Bird, but we can't. Apparently its been a 'top priority' for Cruise and Abrams to find a director (obviously). They need to find one soon because shooting is supposed to start this summer so they can make their May 27th, 2011 release date. Abrams developed the story and set writers Andre Nemec & Josh Appelbaum (of TV shows like "Alias" and "Life on Mars") to pen the script. This would be Bird's first live-action film if he gets the job and I hope he does. I'm very excited to see what he could do with a movie like this. Thoughts?
