Although we have yet to hear anything new about his other film The Cross, news comes from Heat Vision today about another new science fiction project that director Andrew Niccol is preparing to shoot this summer (instead of The Cross). Niccol is the great director responsible for bringing us Gattaca, S1m0ne, and Lord of War, but hasn't made a feature film since 2005. His new project is I'm Mortal, that he wrote and will direct, and is set in the 'not-too-distant' future where the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities.
Basically, the rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. The story that the film will specifically follow focuses on a poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as 'time keepers.' These are the kind of incredible original concepts I miss seeing nowadays, but I'm glad this one actually made it through! Strike Entertainment, who specializes in 'social sci-fi' films like Children of Men and District 9, will produce along with New Regency, who are both currently 'in negotiations' to develop this.
Ever since I started this site, I've been waiting and waiting for Niccol to return to sci-fi with another bold, original brilliant concept, and this could finally be it. I guess The Cross didn't work out with everyone and got canned. I'm Mortal 'could be Niccol's most commercial work yet' and will be more grounded like the 1976 sci-fi film Logan's Run. Niccol is hoping to start shooting in the summer and is already in the midst of casting. Apparently a lot of people are interested because 'every character looks young' since the concept makes every person look the same age regardless of their real age. I can't wait to see how this develops next.
