Mark Strong Briefly Talks About Being Green Lantern's Sinestro

Mark Strong Briefly Talks About Being Green Lantern's Sinestro: "
Sinestro / Mark Strong

We first learned that British actor Mark Strong would be playing Sinestro in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern movie back in January. In the meantime, Strong has been in the UK shooting Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars, but is also prepping for his role as the purple-skinned alien since he'll switch projects in July (even though Green Lantern has already started shooting in Louisiana). Strong recently spoke with USA Weekend (via ComingSoon) who asked him about playing Sinestro and how the character fits into the story. Strong had some fascinating things to say, although not too revealing beyond what we already know.

Strong talks about (spoiler) how Sinestro is Hal Jordan's mentor at first but eventually becomes a villain.

'For anybody who's familiar with the Green Lantern and the origin story, the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan's mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who's made into a Green Lantern. He's certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern,' Strong says. 'He is a military guy but isn't immediately bad. It's the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he's quite a heroic figure.'

Strong also mentions that the character's comic book look, seen in the photo above, will be retained and that the original creators (John Broome & Gil Kane) were inspired by the looks of old movie stars. "That widow's peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Errol Flynn,' explains Strong. 'Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books.” Considering I think Mark Strong is one of the finest actors working today, I'm absolutely certain he'll do the character justice. Sound good?
