Christoph Waltz Set to Become a Director with 'Up and Away': "
Christoph Waltz

When I interviewed Oscar winner Christoph Waltz last year, I learned that he's got a lot of interests, from music to film, but I never knew that he wanted to direct. 24 Frames is reporting that Waltz is set to make his directorial debut on a film called Up and Away. Thankfully it's not a Hollywood production, but it'll be a German-language film produced by Fox International. Even more odd is that it will be romantic comedy set in and around a dating game show. Through a series of events, the woman who runs and hosts the show must confront her feelings about romance, which place more emphasis on its marketability than emotion.

Although this will probably shows at film festivals and open limited here in the US, I'm excited about this news, because I'm fascinated with all things Christoph Waltz. The Austrian actor has wanted to make this movie for years, 'but I never had time to do something else' besides acting until now, Waltz says. He has directed a few movies for German television previously, but never a feature until now. Additionally, Waltz actually wrote the script for Up and Away and may play a supporting role in it as well. The film is loosely based on Meike Winnemuth and Peter Praschl’s novel Auf und Davon and may not start production until 2011, because Waltz has a few other big acting gigs to finish before he can dedicate himself to this project.

'I want to be the kind of director that I as an actor would want to work with,' Waltz said about directing. If you've seen any of his acceptance speeches for the numerous awards that he's won (including the Oscar) for Inglourious Basterds, Waltz always talks about how it's Quentin Tarantino who was truly responsible for his performance being so great in that movie. I think Waltz was very inspired by the way Tarantino directed that and will be taking that experience to heart while heading into Up and Away. As a very big fan of Waltz, I can't wait to see what he can do behind the camera as well, even if it's just for a German romantic comedy.
