Green Day's American Idiot Musical Headed to the Big Screen

Green Day's American Idiot Musical Headed to the Big Screen: "
Green Day's American Idiot

If you didn't know, punk rock band Green Day turned their popular album American Idiot into a one-act stage musical of the same name featuring songs from that album as well as their recent album 21st Century Breakdown. After much buzz, the musical is headed to Broadway next month, but Deadline says that plans for a feature film adaptation are already in the works as Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions want to tell the coming-of-age story of three small-town guys: one joins the armed forces, another moves to the city and gets lost in drugs, and the third stays home and gets his girlfriend pregnant. These kids definitely aren't all right.

Like a genuine musical, there isn't much dialogue beyond the lyrics from the music of Green Day, so if you're not a fan or think they've sold out, you should probably tune out. As a rock-based musical, it'll be interesting to see if they get any big name actors to fill the roles like many award-seeking musicals, or if it'll be a cast of relatively unknown stars. Hanks and Playtone had a great audience reception for the adaptation of Mamma Mia! not to mention that pseudo-musical That Thing You Do! (they really love musicals with exclamation points). Sounds like we won't be short of musicals in the near future with other projects like In the Heights and Rock of Ages on the way focusing on more contemporary sounds entering the musical genre, as well as more conventional musicals like Damn Yankees. As a fan of many musicals, count me excited. Thoughts?
