Michel Gondry's Future is with Ellen Page & 'The We & The I'

Michel Gondry's Future is with Ellen Page & 'The We & The I': "
Michel Gondry

So we know Michel Gondry is currently in post-production on Sony's The Green Hornet, but the French filmmaker loves to work on a handful of projects, including music videos and beyond. Gondry was recently down in Austin at SXSW for the US premiere of his documentary The Thorn in the Heart and spoke with a few other websites there. The Playlist learned about a new experimental project has coming up called The We & The I that sounds pretty damn cool. Then MTV got him to reveal that Ellen Page might be cast in another time travel project he's working on that may or may not be related to Master of Space and Time.

After Gondry finishes The Green Hornet, he will 'hopefully' then move on to The We & The I, a project that was born out of development on his book You'll Like This Film Because You're In It. Gondry explains: 'When I wrote this book, I always wrote 'I did this,' or 'we did that,' and my publisher said 'we have to do something for the we and the I.'' Well that sounds cool, but what is it about? Check out this crazy concept:

'It's about the group effect, how people in groups transform when the group is dislocated, because everyone jumps out of the bus at different times, there is a smaller group and how the relationships evolve.' Is it another science-fiction project? 'No, it's kids on a bus, it's more like a social thing. It's not [well-known] actors, it's going to be kids from a school in the Bronx. I love kids and just [regular] people too because they are not polluted by the medium. They come as they are and they have beautiful stories to tell, so I want to show that.'

I'm definitely interested just because that concept sounds so different and unique, but of course we expect nothing less from Gondry, right? Don't forget that he's also the same guy who directed the Dave Chappelle's Block Party documentary. A few years ago, another new project that we heard Gondry had in development was called The Master of Space and Time, but apparently 'that's not going to happen' anymore, so what else does he got on his plate? How about another 'similar' time travel project that he won't even reveal the title for, but will say that he wants Ellen Page to star in as the lead. MTV got the scoop on this project this time and it's another crazy concept that I can't wait to hear more about. Gondry tries to describe what it's about:

'I'm developing a screenplay with a writer right now about kids who travel [into] the future by mistake and a machine [that] keeps people younger… ehhh, it's complicated to explain."

'Ellen Page is supposed to be the main character,' Gondry said. 'She'd play Nancy… a young woman who participates in the discovery and changes the world."

I'm already very excited to see Page appear in Chris Nolan's Inception as a character named 'Ariadne' who is helping change the world by going inside of people's dreams, but that's something else entirely. Not only do I love Gondry as a director because he has such a great style that evolves on almost every project, but the concepts he comes up with are always fun. It's refreshing to see such off-the-wall concepts in the hands of a filmmaker who knows how to bring them to life in creative ways. It looks like he'll be jumping to The We & The I next, but I can't wait to see what he does after that. Which project are you looking forward to?
