Casting Tidbits: Green Lantern, Attack the Block & The Rite: "
Angela Bassett, Jodie Whittaker, Colin O'Donoghue

These Casting Tidbits will self-destruct. First up, Heat Vision reports Angela Bassett (Meet the Browns, Akeelah and the Bee) has joined the cast of DC Comics' Green Lantern in a role that has the potential to set up a larger story arc in the DC Universe. Bassett will play Dr. Amanda Waller, a government agent who in comics lore eventually oversees the Suicide Squad, a government-run group of captured super-villains performing tasks in exchange for eventual freedom. No word on how involved her role is, but I hope DC is planning to bring a series of interconnected stories to the big screen much like Marvel's current endeavors.

Next, Variety reports Colin Egglesfield ('Melrose Place,' Must Love Dogs) will join John Krasinski and Ginnifer Goodwin in the romantic comedy Something Borrowed. He'll be playing the 'Dex character' and since we have no context of how that character fits into the overall story, we have no idea what the hell that means. What we do know is Goodwin is playing a Manhattan attorney who becomes involved with her best friend's fiance following her 30th birthday. Naughty, naughty. Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) is directing from a script by 'Lipstick Jungle' writer Jennie Snyder Urman.

Also, after recently hearing of Nick Frost's potential involvement in Joe Cornish's alien invasion comedy Attack the Block, thanks to ScreenDaily (via The Playlist) we can confirm that the Shaun of the Dead co-star is indeed part of the cast as well as Luke Treadaway (Clash of the Titans), Jodie Whittaker (Venus), John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones and Simon Howard. The story follows a group of hoodies (which is British for mischievous youths in hooded tops), who the media believe are responsible for a wave of muggings, that are interrupted during a street robbery by a flying saucer crash and alien attack. Killing their extra-terrestrial visitor, they return to their work only to discover that there are more aliens out there.

And, Variety reports Colin O'Donoghue ('The Tudors') is closing a deal to join The Rite, the exorcism drama starring Anthony Hopkins. The story follows an American seminary student (O'Donoghue) who attends exorcism school at the Vatican and finds his faith while Hopkins is playing a priest who is an expert in exorcisms. Adapted from the novel by Matt Baglio, Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom, of Derailed and 1408 will direct from a Michael Petroni script.

Finally, THR reports Matt Bomer ('White Collar,' 'Chuck') and Ari Graynor (Whip It, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist) are negotiating to join Anna Faris and Chris Evans in the new rom-com What's Your Number? The story focuses on a woman (Faris) who treks through her sexual past to find Mr. Right, exploring the idea of sexual quotas and whether such numbers matter. Bomer will play Faris' dream guy while Graynor will play her sister whose wedding provides much of the backdrop for the film. Apparently there's a whole bunch of cameos in store for the film, so stay tuned to hear some names in the future.

Well, that's all for this edition of Casting Tidbits. Be sure to stay tuned for more casting updates on the way!
