Since he's been busy fighting aliens, government conspirators and even Hitler, Tom Cruise hasn't really had time for a genuine romance since 1997's Jerry Maguire. I suppose you could call Eyes Wide Shut or Vanilla Sky romances, but their surreal qualities kind of take away from the traditional romantic elements. But it looks like he might be returning to some romantic cinema as LA Times' 24 Frames reports Cruise and Reese Witherspoon are interested in the lead roles for a romance called Paper Wings. Set in the world of rodeo, Cruise would play a rodeo champ who falls for Witherspoon, an up-and-coming country singer.
This would be Cruise's first venture into cowboy territory while Witherspoon has plenty of experience in that world with her award winning turn as Johnny Cash's wife in Walk the Line. The project has been around for a little while jumping from New Line to Sony, but with Will Smith's Overbrook Ent. producing, it looks like they're finally pushing it forward and looking at directors like Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds, The Pursuit of Happyness) to direct. I'm not the biggest fan of rodeos, but don't mind the western, home-grown feel of a good romance after enjoying Crazy Heart quite a bit, so we'll just have to wait and see how this all pans out. Stay tuned for updates as they arrive. Looking forward to seeing Cruise and Witherspoon together?
