Dawn Treader & Gullivan's Travels Go 3-D, But for How Long?: "
Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

When you hear rumors about a blockbuster heading into the third dimension, you pretty much accept it as fact. But ComingSoon went and confirmed the recent rumors that Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Gulliver's Travels will both be in 3-D. The third journey into Narnia, directed by Michael Apted, will be released on December 10th while the Jack Black-led fantasy-comedy adaptation of Jonathan Swift's famous novel will hit theaters December 22nd. However, with the plethora of 3-D releases hitting theaters this holiday season, just how much will the box office, or for that matter, audiences, benefit?

November and December are already chock full of 3-D blockbuster fare, and as we heard previously, when James Cameron's Avatar was kicked out of a bunch of not only IMAX but 3-D screens, Fox stood to lose a decent chunk of money by losing those screens. So how exactly are other studios planning to make big bank with 3-D releases (spending millions of dollars in post-production conversions for most) when they can only spend such a brief amount of time in the limited amount of 3-D capable theaters? What's going to happen?

The current 3-D line-up has DreamWorks Animation's Megamind on November 5th, a limited release of Disney's Rapunzel story Tangled on November 12th (with a wide release on the 24th), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I on November 19th and then in December, Tron Legacy will hit 3-D IMAX on December 17th right smack in the middle of Narnia and Guillver's 3-D releases. That overhaul doesn't allow much breathing room to get the full box office potential from audiences, and it makes me wonder if 3-D will actually be worth the cost at that point, especially if the quality isn't going to be anything like what we've seen in Avatar. Cue the incessant arguing about love/hate for 3-D in the comments below!
