Just before the end of '09, we got confirmation that Chris Pine would indeed be stepping into the shoes previously filled by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck before him as the new Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst who is the subject of a series of Tom Clancy's political thriller novels. Now the scoop machine Pajiba has gotten some new details on the project which is now tentatively titled Moscow, and has Ryan heading to (you guessed it) Russia to continue his financial advising work (before he joined the CIA) for a billionaire employer who sets him up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the US economy.
After that (minor spoilers are ahead - so watch out), Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer. This definitely lines up with the very brief details we've heard previously about the opening of the film showing Jack Ryan on Wall Street after a period of time in the Marine Corps. And with this new plot information it seems like this will be a a solid action thriller with plenty of chasing to ensue, which is exactly what I'm hoping to see.
Pajiba also points out that this summary sounds similar to another different script from Adam Cozen called Dubai, the story of an economist who moves to Dubai and uncovers a terrorist plot to create a huge drop in the value of the US dollar leading to mass starvation. That script was sold to Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who just happens to be a producer on the Jack Ryan flick. Coincidence or design? Maybe they're borrowing that story an integrating it into the Jack Ryan world? Either way, this sounds good to me, since Clancy's novels have always been a perfect blend of thriller and action. Any Tom Clancy fans like the sounds of this?
