This weekend, you can see British actor Luke Evans (also seen above) in Clash of the Titans as the mighty Apollo, but coming down the road, the actor will also take on another godlike role as he is set to play Zeus in Tarsem Singh's War of the Gods, or as it's also known, Dawn of War. MTV caught up with Evans where he talked about the differences between Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans and Singh's unique vision for his Greek mythology epic. In his chatter, he also revealed that Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and John Hurt (Hellboy, V for Vendetta) will round out an already decent sized cast for this movie.
Lucas (who has some of the fiercest and mesmerizing eyebrows) will play Zeus' daughter Athena while Hurt will play an older version of Zeus. Evans then compares Leterrier's Titans and Singh's forthcoming film:
''Dawn of War' really plays on the human side of the battle, whereas there are so many monsters in 'Clash of the Titans.' This film really is very strongly based on Earth, I would say, and it is about the human battle. The gods have a very strong presence in 'Dawn of War,' and it's a much bigger action film; this is way more action. Whereas the gods in 'Clash of the Titans' do very little but stay in Mount Olympus, in 'God of War' they are hands-on — especially Zeus. I've had training in every weapon you could imagine a god using.'
He went on to comment that while Zeus is traditionally the overseer of the battlefield, his Zeus 'gets some gory weapons and gets to do some superhuman things — godlike things — with them. As only Zeus, king of the gods, could do.' I won't see Clash of the Titans until later this weekend, but it already sounds like this is going to blow it and that turtle-looking Kraken out of the water next year. Evans says of director Tarsem:
'What's great about Tarsem is you only have to spend 10 minutes in his company to know the man is a visionary and a genius. If you know his work, you know how beautiful and visually stunning it can be. Tarsem sets an amazing scene and allows the actors to feel completely immersed in the world — we've walked on to the sets and they're superb. The details of these sets are spectacular, and you know Tarsem has had a hand in every decision.'
It sounds like Singh is going to be a huge director and if his vision of this film is any indicator, he's got quite an interesting palette of ideas to work with. Anything fresh is more than welcome in Hollywood right now as they're stuck recycling everything under the sun (even though these two projects are very similar). I know I'm excited to see how War of the Gods or Dawn of War, whatever it will actually be called, will eventually turn out. Hopefully we can all stand to wait until 11/11/11 (November 11th, 2011) to see how it turns out. As always, stay tuned for more updates.
