Just last month we heard about some potential casting for the interesting and seemingly brilliant satirical comedy Butter, a script that made the '08 Black List, about a young orphan girl who, after being adopted by a Midwestern family, discovers that she has an incredible talent for butter-carving. She eventually finds herself up against the ambitious wife of the retired reigning champion in a town's annual butter-sculpting contest. At the time we heard that Jim Carrey might be leading the comedy, but 24 Frames now reports Rob Corddry has taken the role that was turned down by Carrey, and also confirms Kate Hudson is cast, too.
In addition, Ty Burrell, who has been hilarious on the series 'Modern Family' and has had work in films like Leaves of Grass and The Incredible Hulk, has been cast as Jennifer Garner's (who was cast awhile ago) husband, and Yara Shahidi, the young girl from Imagine That, will be playing the orphan butter sculpting prodigy. While the butter sculpting premise might sound hokey on paper, the story has interesting parallels to the political arena, specifically the 2008 Iowa Democratic Caucus. Think of the young orphan in the story (an African American girl) as Barack Obama, the ambitious wife (Garner) as Hilary Clinton, the ole reigning champion as Bill Clinton and Hudson's character (the reigning champion's mistress) as Monica Lewinsky.
Jim Field Smith (She's Out of My League) is directing from Jason Micallef's script. If the description of the tone as being like Election meets Best in Show is accurate, I believe we're in for one hell of a comedy. I think Corddry was one of the best parts of Hot Tub Time Machine and it'll be nice to see him blossom into leading more comedies, following in the same footsteps as other Daily Show alums like Steve Carell and Ed Helms.
