The Toxic Avenger Getting a 'Green' Family Friendly Remake

The Toxic Avenger Getting a 'Green' Family Friendly Remake: "
The Toxic Avenger

Another day, another remake. And this isn't a joke. I never thought we'd see The Toxic Avenger remade, but alas it is, and not in the way you think. Deadline reports that Original Media, Endemol, and producers Akiva Goldsman & Richard Saperstein, are teaming up for a remake of The Toxic Avenger, the 1984 Troma comedy cult classic about a mop-wielding radioactive superhero who wreaks havoc on polluters in Jersey. Believe it or not, this remake will turn 'Toxie' into a 'green superhero for these environmentally conscious times' and also be 'a family friendly PG-13 action comedy akin to The Mask.' Wow this just sounds awful.

The Toxic Avenger is, simply, the story of Melvin, the Tromaville Health Club mop boy, who inadvertently and naively trusts the hedonistic health club members, to the point of accidentally ending up in a vat of toxic waste. The effects turn the local mop boy into the local superhero, the savior of corruption, thuggish bullies and indifference. For those who may be upset that they're remaking it with green sensibilities and a family friendly attitude, don't forget that the film was already turned into a musical in 2008, although that may not mean much. Plus, it's a campy cult classic, so why does it matter what they do with it? Oh right, because this just sounds like a terrible idea. I even re-watched The Mask recently and that didn't hold up either. Oh well.
