Warner Bros Pays Top Dollar for 'All You Need Is Kill' Script: "
All You Need Is Kill

I love reporting on stories like this. Deadline announced today that Warner Bros paid at least $1 million for a spec script that is an adaptation of a Japanese novel called All You Need Is Kill. The spec was written by a fresh new writer named Dante Harper who has been making a lot of big deals around town recently with some strong scripts and other top dollar writing gigs. Apparently his script deal with Warner Bros includes an 'aggressive progress to production clause' that will actually get this moved into production and shooting within 12 months because it's also a movie that can be made quickly. You've got to hear the concept, too.

All You Need Is Kill is a Japanese novel originally written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It's another futuristic alien invasion movie, but uses a Groundhog Day-like plot device where one soldier is caught in some sort of repetitive time loop. A raw recruit, pressed into battle against an alien species, gets killed in action. But he is reborn each day to suffer the same fate. Eventually, he notices that he is becoming a better warrior and that other circumstances are changing, which might be the key to altering the outcome. This actually sounds very similar to Duncan Jones' Source Code, which is currently shooting, so maybe this is WB's competing project.

I just think this sounds like an awesome, unique, and potentially brilliant concept, that I'm happy to see at a studio like Warner that not only knows what they're doing, but has a high level of quality that I'm glad this project will have as well. As long as they attach a great director, this should be one sci-fi project to definitely keep our eyes on as it develops, along with Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, also in the works at WB. Thoughts?
