After co-writing the script with Nicholas Stoller, pitching it to Disney, and helping develop the project up to this point, Heat Vision now reports that actor Jason Segel will also star in Disney's new Muppets movie as well. Supposedly titled The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time (although the trade doesn't confirm that), the movie is about the Muppets coming out of retirement to save the TV studio that the original show was shot in. Segel is also producing along with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films. As we learned earlier this year, 'Flight of the Conchords' co-creator James Bobin will be directing the film.
As was usually the case with most Muppets movies of past, Segel may be one of the only human characters in the movie. The studio isn't talking about the plotline yet, but I'm not sure they could follow that story of saving a studio without having at least a few human characters, but who knows? I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. Thankfully, Segel is one of my favorite comedic actors anyway, so I'm quite happy to see him taking on the lead in a project that really is mostly his own creation. Plus, seeing him sing and perform 'Dracula's Lament' in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (and on talk shows, too) is enough proof that this guy knows how to work with Muppets and have a damn good time with them. I'm definitely looking forward to this! You too?
